There are five principles that all students of Reiki training learn when they are studying to become a Reiki practitioner and master. They are very important principles to the life of a Reiki student, and to all people that are open and willing to use them.
When I first began learning these principles I used them often. I taped them to my kitchen cupboards and my bathroom mirror so I would see them, and be reminded to use them every day. They have become a very important tool in my life. I went through a period when I stopped using them, and I noticed a huge difference in my attitude and my outlook. I have realized just how important they are in keeping my grounded, positive, calm and peaceful.
They are especially important now as I am going through the process of grieving so many losses in my life; my career, my sister, my nephew, and my life as I once knew it. It has been an extremely challenging couple of years, and these last few months have been the most difficult of my life. I truly believe that these principles, along with the therapy I participate in regularly are helping to keep me grounded, and will allow the grief to move through me, while not attaching myself to it.
The following are the five principles of Reiki and how they can help you improve your life regardless of what you are going through.
Before I get started you will notice that all of these principles start with Just for today. This is our reminder that we are only focussing on today. We are not focussed on the past or present. Our concern is not with yesterday or tomorrow, but rather today. We are focussing all of our energy on living in this moment in time. This now moment. When we can do that we remove the blocks that are keeping us from attracting good things into our lives. We are resetting our energy to attract from this now moment, and if this now moment is one of peace, love, harmony, and acceptance these are the things you will attract in your tomorrows.
Here are the five Reiki principles:
1- Just for today I will not be angry.
Being angry robs us of our joy and happiness. This principle is our reminder to forgive everyone and forgive often. Forgiveness, according to A Course In Miracles is our salvation. You cannot be angry and forgive at the same time. Forgivenesss to those that have hurt or angered us allows us to heal every aspect of our lives. I know that forgiveness is not always easy, sometimes it is very, very difficult. However, if you are at least willing to consider it, then you have done so much for yourself to help release that angry energy and move into healing your entire life. Remember, forgiveness is not about the other person. Forgiveness is entirely selfish in that it is all about you! Healing one area of our lives begins a shift in so many other areas. When we say ‘Just for today I will not be angry’, and allow ourselves to feel peace in that moment we change that energy, we begin to improve our mind and body, and possibly remind ourselves that being angry is just not worth it.
2 – Just for today I will not worry.
90% of what we worry about never happens. Get yourself off the hamster wheel and focus on what you want, not what you don’t. We attract what we focus on, so it stands to reason that if you spend your time focussing on negativity then that is what you are drawing to you. However, the opposite is also true. If you spend more of your time focussing on the positive, then that is what you will attract. Remember, love is louder than fear.
3 – Just for today I will be kind to every living thing.
Being kind to EVERY living thing includes yourself. Don’t ever forget that! Kindness is another way of focussing on the positive. See the good in others even when it’s hard. I firmly believe that we are all more alike then we are different, and being kind to another person is not all that difficult. Start with a smile, first at yourself in the mirror first thing in the morning, and then shine that smile to the people you meet throughout your day. You may be surprised at just how effective a smile can be. As this principle states, it is to be applied to ALL living things, not just other people, but to animals as well. Animals have feelings and are just as deserving of kindness as any of us.
4 – Just for today I will do my work with honesty and integrity.
I would add, do everything with honesty and integrity. Be honest and show integrity in the way you do everything and treat everyone. You show people who you are when you gossip, lie, cheat, judge, etc. Is that the person you want people to know and remember? Wouldn’t you rather teach them that you are honest, kind, compassionate, trustworthy, etc? Again think about the energy you are putting out when you are acting from a place of fear, insecurity and dishonesty. This is guaranteed to come back to you. Wouldn’t you prefer to attract kindness, compassion, honesty and love?
5 – Just for today I will count my many blessings.
Never miss an opportunity to appreciate all that you have to be grateful for. From the things you use every day that you take for granted, the people you love, the ones that love you back, to the work you do. Let these things be your focus. When you find yourself lingering in worry, when you’re invited to be angry, take a breath, remind yourself of the fifth principle and find something to be grateful for. Perhaps you could be grateful for the courteous driver, the person that smiled at you, the ones that took the time to talk with you. Find some gratitude for the world you live in that offers so many opportunities and advantages that are not offered in other parts of the world. Be sure to include the kindness of strangers as well as gratitude for yourself and what you love about you! Come on, I’m sure there is something. If not, maybe this principle could use a little more of your focus and you might want to ask yourself why it is you believe you don’t deserve gratitude. I could go on and on about undeservability, but I think I’ll save that for another post.
As you practice these five principles you will change your energy, you will change your mindset, you will change your attitude, and you will change your life.
Every morning I do my meditation in the quiet darkness of my house and my last act, before I open my eyes is to repeat these Reiki principles. Every day when I find myself focussing on something negative, that makes me angry or less than grateful I repeat these five principles and remember that it is my ego that is trying to take me off course. I state the principles, calm my energy and get myself back on course. Some days are easier than others certainly, but it’s all about the practice as I have been reminded of many times lately.
